Palm Beach Gardens is an active sport and arts-centric city about 12 miles north of West Palm Beach. Surrounded by the cities of Jupiter to the north, North Palm Beach and Juno Beach to the east, and Lake Park and Riviera Beach to the south, Palm Beach Gardens is the heart of northern Palm Beach County. As the name suggests, Palm Beach Gardens founder, John D MacArthur, founded the city in 1959 to make it a "garden city." Though it had a somewhat slow start, Palm Beach Gardens began attracting more residents between 1988 and 1999 after the building of the Gardens Mall and the sale of 5,000 acres from the John D and Catherine T MacArthur Foundation, which quickly attracted luxury builders to the area and allowed the necessary space for the many golf courses and grand estates that are a hallmark of the site. The city still features two banyan trees that MacArthur himself had relocated to the town in the early 1970s, one of which is known to be at least 130 years old. You can see them near the intersections of MacArthur Boulevard and Northlake Boulevard, just before the entrance to the villa communities of Lake Catherine and Sun Terrace at the Gardens, or featured on the city's seal. The city also features many unique art sculptures and installments. In 1989, an Art in Public Places ordinance was adopted to ensure it remains a large part of the community focus.
Palm Beach Gardens is most notably known for its role in the professional golfing world as the home of the Professional Golfing Association of America and for hosting the annual golfing event, the Honda Classic, since 2003. The Honda Classic currently takes place off the famed PGA Boulevard on the course at the PGA National Resort and Spa, located within the PGA National community. Before being held at this location, the Country Club at Mirasol hosted the Honda Classic. Both communities feature exciting golf courses where residents can play like the pros. In all, there are a total of 12 golf courses located within the 55 square miles that make up Palm Beach Gardens, sure to keep any avid golfer at the top of their game.
